Mid-19th Century French Bronze Mortar with Original Pestle
$750
About
This handsome antique French mortar and pestle combines a substantial form with a beautifully aged bronze surface. Crafted in France circa 1850, the cylindrical mortar is fitted with two angular side handles and a wide flared rim, giving the piece a strong architectural silhouette. The exterior is decorated with simple incised geometric bands around the upper and lower sections, while the lightly textured surface displays the irregularities and character associated with traditional casting.
The mortar retains its original bronze pestle, shaped with rounded ends for grinding herbs, spices, and medicinal preparations. Originally a functional kitchen or apothecary implement, the set now makes an attractive decorative accessory for a kitchen, library, bar, or collection of antique culinary objects.
The bronze has developed a warm golden patina with minor surface marks and wear consistent with its age and original use. The antique mortar and pestle are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
