Capture the dramatic beauty of the Normandy coast with this luminous vintage marine painting by celebrated French artist Jacques Bouyssou (1926–1997). Painted in France circa 1970 and titled Grande Marée à Grandcamp, the original oil on canvas depicts the powerful high tide at Grandcamp, where fishing boats and small sailing vessels move across choppy turquoise waters beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky.

A weathered wooden pier projects into the sea at lower left, where small figures gather to watch the maritime activity. Seabirds circle above the water, while navigational markers and distant boats animate the horizon. The sweeping sky occupies much of the composition, emphasizing the rapidly changing Normandy weather and creating remarkable depth and atmosphere. Broad, expressive brushwork conveys the movement of the waves, and Bouyssou’s harmonious palette of pale blue, white, sea green, and soft gray is enlivened by touches of yellow, red, and deep blue.

Born near Honfleur in 1926, Jacques Bouyssou was introduced to art through his father’s gallery, where artists including Othon Friesz, Raoul Dufy, Robert Lagar, and Marcel Leprin were frequent visitors. He studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts de Troyes and later attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where he worked in the studio of Othon Friesz. Bouyssou became especially known for his paintings of Normandy’s beaches, harbors, fishing ports, and coastal towns.

Following successful exhibitions in Paris, London, New York, and other international cities, Bouyssou received numerous distinctions, including first prize at the Salon des Bas Normands in 1955, first prize at Deauville in 1965, and the Médaille de la Ville de Paris in 1978. He was appointed an official painter of the French Navy and was named a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor in 1990. His works are held in important public and private collections in France and abroad.

The large painting is signed “Jacques Bouyssou” at the lower right and retains the original title Grande Marée à Grandcamp inscribed on the reverse, reinforcing its connection to the Normandy fishing port that inspired the composition. It is presented in a substantial painted wood frame with layered moldings and a softly aged silver-toned finish.

The antique painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining rich color and expressive surface texture. Monumental in scale and highly decorative, it would make a striking focal point in a living room, study, library, office, coastal residence, or interior furnished with antique and modern pieces.
