Mid-Century Italian Pietra Dura Bird Wall Plaques in Silvered Frames, Set of 4
$6,200
About
Add color, texture, and refined Italian craftsmanship to a hallway, study, powder room, or gallery wall with this decorative set of four framed pietra dura plaques. Crafted in Italy circa 1960, each rectangular panel features finely cut and fitted colored stones arranged as songbirds perched on foliate branches, set against a polished black marble ground. The mosaic compositions include a lively variety of birds, leaves, fruit, and branches, each created using the traditional pietra dura technique, often described as stone marquetry. Pietra dura is an intricate decorative art in which marble, hardstones, and sometimes semi-precious stones are carefully sliced, shaped, polished, and inlaid to form pictorial designs. The technique originated in Italy and reached particular refinement in Florence, where artisans created highly detailed images from precisely fitted stone sections. Each plaque is mounted in a carved silvered frame with a warm aged patina and molded profile. The backs retain later metal brackets and hanging rings. The set is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions of each: 25” W x 2.25” D x 17” H
