Pair of Early 20th Century French Louis XV Walnut Fauteuils with Scalamandré
$4,600
About
This elegant pair of antique armchairs was crafted in France circa 1920 in the Louis XV style. Each fauteuil is built of carved walnut and features a shaped upholstered back framed by scrolling moldings and a carved floral crest, above open arms with padded rests and gracefully curved supports. The serpentine seat rail is enriched with carved floral and foliate motifs, while the cabriole legs terminate in delicately scrolled feet, giving the chairs a refined and balanced silhouette.
The generously proportioned seats, backs, and arm pads are upholstered in luxurious Scalamandré fabric with an exotic botanical pattern of flowers, fruit, foliage, and butterflies worked in warm shades of gold, green, red, and soft blue. Traditional brass nailhead trim outlines the upholstery and complements the warm patina of the walnut frames.
The combination of richly carved French woodwork and colorful Scalamandré textile gives these antique fauteuils a particularly decorative presence without feeling overly formal. Comfortable as well as sculptural, they would work beautifully as a matched pair in a living room, library, bedroom, or sitting area.
Both chairs are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
