20th Century French Riviera Oil Painting “Déjeuner à Cap Ferrat” by Duane Alt
$5,400
About
Vibrant color and spontaneous brushwork bring the glamour of the French Riviera to life in this original oil painting by American-French Impressionist Duane Alt (born 1935). Painted circa 1990 and titled Déjeuner à Cap Ferrat, the composition depicts an inviting terrace overlooking the marina at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the Côte d’Azur. A vase overflowing with brilliant coral-pink roses anchors the foreground, surrounded by café tables, garden chairs, and sunlit paving stones. Beyond the terrace, sailboats rest in the harbor beneath the distinctive hills of the Mediterranean coastline.
Alt’s energetic application of paint and luminous palette of rose, lavender, blue, and vivid green give the scene a joyful immediacy. The painting is signed “D. Alt” in the lower right corner and retains a handwritten label on the reverse identifying the subject. The oil on canvas is presented in an ornate carved giltwood frame decorated with flowers, scrolling foliage, and textured borders.
Born in Nebraska and raised in Southern California, Duane Alt studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles before working as an artist for Walt Disney. He later enjoyed a 25-year career as an art director and production designer for MGM, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Bros. Alt became widely recognized for his French Impressionist-inspired landscapes, harbor scenes, and still lifes. In 1993, he was invited to exhibit at Le Salon de la Société des Artistes Français at the Grand Palais in Paris. The artist retired from painting in 2021.
