19th Century French Rococo Giltwood Mantel Mirror with Heart Motifs
$3,400
About
Place this elegant antique French mirror over a mantel or anchor a room with its refined presence. Crafted in France circa 1860, the rectangular giltwood frame is richly decorated with Rococo Revival motifs, including scrolling acanthus, floral garlands, and distinctive heart-shaped cartouches at the crest and corners, adding a romantic decorative element.
The frame retains a warm gilt finish with a beautifully aged patina, showing subtle wear and tonal variation that enhance its depth and authenticity. A delicate beaded inner trim outlines the mirror plate, providing a refined contrast to the more expressive outer ornamentation. The mirror retains its original mercury glass, presenting light foxing and minor spotting consistent with age, creating a soft, gently diffused reflection.
The reverse shows traditional wood backing and construction, fitted with a later wire for secure hanging. This antique mantel mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor losses to the gilding and surface wear that only add to its character.
Versatile in scale and design, it can be used as a classic mantel mirror or hung in an entry, bedroom, or above a console for added height and elegance.
