Charming and full of character, this antique barbotine pitcher takes the form of a jovial monk with a warm, smiling expression. Crafted in France circa 1890 by the Onnaing Faïencerie, the sculptural majolica jug depicts the robed figure holding his hands against his chest in a welcoming gesture.

The monk’s habit and integrated handle are hand-painted in warm shades of brown, with darker accents emphasizing the folds, facial features, and textured surface. A traditional soft pink glaze lines the interior, creating an appealing contrast with the earthy exterior palette. The underside is stamped with model number “706,” further identifying the design. A similar example is illustrated on page 78 of Maryse Bottero’s reference book Pichets en Barbotine.

Founded in Onnaing in northern France in 1821, the Onnaing Faïencerie became particularly celebrated for its imaginative majolica pitchers and planters. Its designs ranged from floral and geometric motifs to whimsical characters and historical figures, with individual forms generally assigned a model number and name.

Ideal for display in a kitchen, dining room, or wet bar, this collectible pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining its vivid glazes and crisp sculptural detail.
