19th Century French Louis XVI Rosewood Marquetry Console with Rouge Marble
$3,550
About
Elegant in both proportion and detail, this antique Louis XVI console combines refined marquetry, finely cast gilt-bronze mounts, and a striking rouge marble top. Crafted in France circa 1870, the table is veneered in richly figured rosewood and decorated throughout with delicate geometric inlay framing the drawer fronts and side panels.
The serpentine façade is fitted with three drawers, including a broad center drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, each retaining period-style gilt-bronze hardware. The corners are embellished with classical gilt-bronze mounts featuring draped garlands and foliate ornament, while an additional bronze mount accents the shaped lower apron. Slender tapering legs continue the graceful profile and terminate in gilt-bronze sabots.
The console is crowned with a beautifully veined rouge marble top, shaped to follow the case and finished with a molded edge. Its warm red, white, and gray veining creates a handsome contrast with the richly toned rosewood below. The long center drawer retains a red fabric-lined interior, offering useful concealed storage.
With its restrained Louis XVI symmetry, fine marquetry, and elegant scale, this antique console would work beautifully in an entryway, salon, dining room, or beneath a large mirror.
The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a warm, well-preserved patina.
