About
Crafted in Paris, France circa 1890, this elegant antique mantel clock by Alcide Chaumeil is a beautiful example of traditional French faience craftsmanship. The decorative ceramic case features a gracefully shaped silhouette with a scalloped crest, scrolling feet, and intricate hand-painted decoration in the classic blue and white palette.
The front is embellished with delicate cobalt-blue floral sprays surrounding a circular clock dial, while the lower section depicts a charming 18th-century gentleman holding bells in a pastoral landscape. Both sides are decorated with picturesque Dutch-inspired scenes featuring windmills, sailing boats, cottages, and waterways. Additional floral garlands, foliate borders, and geometric motifs accent the sculptural case, showcasing the artistry and attention to detail characteristic of late 19th-century French ceramics.
The circular clock face features Roman numerals, black hands, and a brass bezel with a protective clear cover. The original mechanical movement has been replaced with a battery-operated quartz mechanism for modern convenience. The underside bears the blue-painted “CA” monogram above the number 535, identifying the Alcide Chaumeil workshop.
Alcide Chaumeil was a Parisian faience decorator known for finely painted ceramics inspired by the historic pottery traditions of Rouen and Nevers.
The antique clock is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining its rich cobalt-blue decoration and glossy glazed finish. An elegant addition to a mantel, bookshelf, or desk.
