About
Bring the light and atmosphere of the French Riviera into an office, study, den, or living room with this richly textured antique oil painting by Jean-Baptiste Duffaud. Crafted in France circa 1885, the oil on canvas is signed lower left by Jean-Baptiste Duffaud (1853-1927), a French painter listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists. The luminous composition depicts Antibes and Le Cap d’Antibes, with the sunlit seaside town extending along the Mediterranean shoreline, deep blue waters to the left, and soft mountain ranges rising in the distance.
Born in Marseille in 1853, Duffaud studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille before continuing his training in Paris under notable academic painters including Paul-Joseph Blanc, Paul Baudry, and Jean-Léon Gérôme. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and received several distinctions, including honorable mention in 1885, medals in 1889 and 1891, and was named Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1906.
Executed with a palette knife and heavy impasto technique, the painting has a vibrant, tactile surface that brings the sea, rooftops, mountains, and shoreline to life. Soft blues, lavender, pink, cream, and green tones create a luminous southern atmosphere, while the thickly applied paint gives the work wonderful depth and movement. An old handwritten note and Bénézit reference affixed to the reverse provide additional information about the artist, his exhibition history, and earlier provenance.
The antique painting is presented in an elaborate carved giltwood frame with a warm aged patina. The work is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with attractive craquelure, surface texture, and minor wear consistent with period and technique.
