19th Century French Louis XV Walnut Marquetry Secrétaire à Abattant
$3,600
About
Graceful serpentine lines and intricate marquetry give this antique secrétaire à abattant its refined Louis XV character. Crafted in Paris, France circa 1870, the tall walnut writing cabinet stands on cabriole legs ending in gilt-bronze sabots above a scalloped apron centered with an ornate ormolu mount.
The fall front is richly decorated with parquetry and delicate floral marquetry, framed by decorative gilt-bronze mounts at the shoulders. When lowered, it reveals the original green leather writing surface embellished with gilt-tooled detailing. The fitted interior contains six small drawers, a larger central drawer, two concealed side drawers, and an open compartment for papers and correspondence.
Below the writing section, three full-width drawers provide generous storage. Each drawer is traditionally constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and fitted with decorative gilt-bronze handles and escutcheons. The secrétaire retains its functioning key.
The cabinet is surmounted by its original variegated Breccia marble top, displaying dramatic pink, cream, and golden veining beneath a molded edge. The warm walnut grain, figured veneers, and finely executed marquetry complement the colorful stone beautifully.
The antique writing cabinet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich walnut patina and refined craftsmanship throughout. Its fall front closes neatly when not in use, preserving the piece’s elegant and slender silhouette.
