19th Century French Patinated Spelter Sculpture of Woman by A. Moreau
$2,300
About
Decorate a console, mantel, or library with this elegant antique French figural sculpture. Created in France circa 1880, the composition depicts a young woman seated on a naturalistic rocky base, her hands gently crossed and her posture conveying a quiet, contemplative moment. The subject, titled Mignon, reflects the romantic and sentimental themes favored in late 19th century French sculpture.
Crafted in spelter with a richly patinated bronze finish, the figure is finely detailed throughout, from the soft movement of her hair and expressive facial features to the delicate folds of her dress. The sculpture is mounted on a shaped black and grey veined marble base, adding weight, contrast, and refinement to the overall presentation. The work is signed A. Moreau and retains its original plaque at the base.
The antique sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a warm, time-softened patina across the surface and minor wear consistent with its age.
Auguste Moreau (1834–1917) was a member of the renowned Moreau family of sculptors and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. His work is celebrated for its graceful figures and accessible romantic subjects, making his sculptures highly sought after by collectors and decorators alike.
