19th Century French Majolica Barbotine Cache Pot with Bird Relief Decor
$1,525
About
Bring vibrant color and sculptural charm to a tabletop, jardinière stand, or sunroom with this exceptional antique majolica cachepot. Crafted in France circa 1860, the ceramic planter features a bombe-form body raised on three shaped bracket feet and finished with a softly scalloped rim accented by faux bamboo trim. Richly glazed in deep cobalt blue with contrasting turquoise, cream, green, and warm brown tones, the piece showcases the lively palette and expressive craftsmanship associated with fine French barbotine pottery.
Each side is decorated with a beautifully modeled bird composition in high relief, depicting songbirds perched among flowering branches, nests, foliage, and woodland scenery. The intricate hand-sculpted details create remarkable depth and movement, while the glossy glaze enhances the dimensional quality of the naturalistic scenes. The interior is finished in a pale turquoise glaze that provides a striking contrast to the richly saturated exterior.
The antique ceramic planter remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and presents beautifully as a decorative centerpiece, cachepot, or display vessel for floral arrangements.
