Add rich color and sculptural character to a mantel, console, or dining-room display with this striking pair of antique barbotine vases. Crafted in Southern France circa 1880, each majolica vessel features a classical urn-shaped body raised on a molded circular foot and flanked by elaborate brown-glazed dragon-form handles.

The celadon-green bodies are embellished with molded bands, scrolling foliage, classical masks, and other raised ornamental details. Across the front of each vase, an applied fruiting branch bears two ripe yellow pears surrounded by brown stems, green and russet leaves, delicate pink blossoms, and clusters of dark berries. The richly modeled decoration creates an appealing three-dimensional effect characteristic of French barbotine pottery.

Warm brown glazing highlights the flared rims, pedestal bases, and fanciful dragon handles, providing a handsome contrast to the green ground. Each interior is finished with a pale blue glaze. Beautifully decorated from every angle, the matched vases would make an impressive addition to an enfilade, buffet, mantel, or collection of antique French ceramics.

Both vases are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining vivid colors and a glossy finish. Markings appear on the undersides.
