About

Distinguished by its intricate turned base and architectural proportions, this antique Louis XIII side table is a wonderful example of traditional French cabinetmaking. Crafted in France circa 1780, the rectangular table is constructed of solid walnut and features a rich, warm patina developed over centuries of use.

The substantial rectangular top is finished with a molded edge and rests above a deep apron decorated with finely carved geometric crosshatch motifs. A single drawer fitted with a decorative iron pull provides convenient storage, while the clean lines of the top contrast beautifully with the elaborate turned elements below.

The table stands on four boldly turned baluster legs, each featuring a succession of rounded knops, collars, and ring-turned details characteristic of the Louis XIII style. The legs are joined by an elaborate H-form stretcher assembly, similarly decorated with turned balusters and ornamental finials rising from the connecting rails. These sculptural elements create a particularly striking architectural base while providing additional stability.

The table retains a beautiful walnut finish with subtle variations in color, attractive grain patterns, and a deep patina that enhances its historic character. The combination of robust construction, intricate turning, and restrained geometric decoration reflects the enduring influence of 17th-century French Renaissance furniture design.

The antique table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Both decorative and functional, this distinctive piece would make a wonderful addition to a living room, library, or study, serving as a center table, writing table, or desk in a traditional interior.
